Weather experts have forecast that further sub-zero temperatures, which follow the coldest December in more than a decade, will last for around 10 days.
Temperatures have already dipped to -10C and could plummet to -15C later this week with the North East hit the hardest nationally.
Family history buffs in Northumberland are turning to the web.
Northumberland County Council produced a video (below) to raise awareness of the facilities available to people wanting to know more about their ancestors.
It was uploaded onto internet video sharing site YouTube and has got more than 12,000 hits.

A video has been launched by Northumberland County Council to help it meet demanding Government recycling targets.
The tutorial video (watch below) shows Northumberland County Council's new recycling centre in action and helps residents understand what can and can't be put into the recycling bin.
In Northumberland the council is responsible for collecting waste from more than 140,000 households as well as thousands of business premises.

As the summer draws to a close, the season of summer shows is also winding down, although this coming weekend has another three great ones to choose from.
Whitfield, Harbottle and Heddon are all looking forward to holding their shows, which gives YourNostalgia a chance to look back at some Journal archive pictures of the three villages from days gone by.
One picture is pre-war, with a view of Harbottle in November 1935. The description gave it as "the site of the 'House of Commans', and where the prison once overflowed".
